Tennessee Titans Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor - Drexel Perry, mvn.com/nfl-titans

Team Needs - WR, DE, G, TE, RB

Key additions - TE Alge Crumpler (Atlanta), DE Jevon Kearse (Philadelphia), G Jake Scott (Indianapolis), WR Justin McCareins (N.Y. Jets)

Key Losses - G Jacob Bell (St. Louis), DE Antwan Odom (Cincinnati), DE Travis LaBoy (Arizona)

Key Free Agents Retained - DT Albert Haynesworth (Franchised) WR Justin Gage (Re-Signed)

Free Agency Notes - Heading into the offseason, securing the services of a bona fide playmaker was #1 on the Titans agenda. Picking up Alge Crumpler was a step in the right direction, as he will provide the team with its best TE since the days of Frank Wycheck.

Re-signing Gage was a good move and the hope is for former Titan Justin McCareins to flourish in Mike Heimerdinger's offense once more.

The departures of Odom, LaBoy and Bell forced the Titans to make moves to replace them. "The Freak" Jevon Kearse was brought back into the fold to help replace the losses at the DE position. Instead of overpaying to retain the services of Jacob Bell, the Titans decided to partake in their annual raiding of the Indianapolis Colts' roster by signing Jake Scott to start at guard.

Grade - B

Review of Grade - Scott was a good signing and it was a coup to pick up veterans Crumpler and Kearse at bargain prices. The only disappointment thus far is the failure to bring in an elite talent at WR, but the team will probably address this position in the draft. The draft is also where the team will look to pick up some additional depth on the defensive line.

Titans' defense will be healthy

It appears the Titans will be at full strength on defense for the first time in more than a month when they face the Ravens in the AFC divisional playoffs Saturday.

Ravens' safety concerns Titans

Ed Reed caught the pass over his shoulder as if it was meant for him.

Titans could be without Pro Bowl center Mawae vs. Ravens

The Tennessee Titans got Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and end Kyle Vanden Bosch back on the practice field Tuesday. The availability of Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae against Baltimore depends on who is talking.

Scouting report: Ravens-Titans will get physical again

The divisional playoff game between the Ravens and Titans will be nothing short of a heavyweight slugfest. After breaking down their Week 5 game, it's hard to tell which team has an edge.

Defenses take center stage in AFC Divisional Playoffs

The Chargers and Ravens triumphed thanks to their tough defenses, but awaiting in the divisional round are two other teams with tough-to-crack defenses.

A few Titans-Ravens matchups to watch

One matchup shouldn't solely determine the outcome of a game but there's one that concerns me a little this week. I'm a little concerned about the Ratbirds' behemoth nose tackle, Haloti Ngata, vs either Kevin Mawae or Leroy Harris. If Mawae plays, he may be limited and/or hindered by his elbow. I'm sure he's not going to sit out just because it's painful; he's too tough a guy to let a little pain keep him out. If he misses the game, it will be either because o-line coach Mike Munchak feels the elbow will limit his effectiveness, or Doc Elrod will keep him out if he's concerned Mawae might do more damage to the elbow. From what I've heard, the former seems to be the more likely scenario.

Hey, the Titans did win 10 games after all

Some of you probably remember my post in the preseason about how the the Titans wouldn't win 10 games, as most fans suspected they would.  I took another look at that after the Titans went to 5-0, moving off my initial prediction.  So, now that the Titans did indeed win 10 games this year after all (286 times!), it's time to take another look at where and how I went wrong.

Just like old times: Titans vs. Ravens once again

In 2000, the Tennessee Titans' path to a Super Bowl in Tampa Bay was obstructed by a rugged Baltimore Ravens team that upset them in an epic playoff battle.

Eight years later, those pesky Ravens are once again standing in the way of the Titans' journey to a Super Bowl trip to Tampa.

Thanks to yesterday's convincing victory over the Dolphins, the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans will renew one of the league's most fiercest rivalries in next Saturday's playoff showdown.
