San Francisco 49ers Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Samuel Lam, mvn.com/nfl-49ers

Team Needs: DL, OL, LB, WR

Key additions: WR Bryant Johnson (Arizona), LB Dontarrious Thomas (Minnesota), RB DeShaun Foster (Carolina), KR Allen Rossum (Pittsburgh), WR Isaac Bruce (St. Louis), DE Justin Smith (Cincinnati)

Key Losses: WR Darrell Jackson, G Justin Smiley (Miami), QB Trent Dilfer, DE Marques Douglas (Tampa Bay), LB Derek Smith (San Diego)

Key Free Agents Retained: CB Donald Strickland (Re-signed), TE Billy Bajema (Re-Signed), NT Isaac Sopoaga (Re-signed), QB Shaun Hill (Re-signed)

Free Agency Notes: With the retirement of Bryant Young and Larry Allen, the Niners look to fill in the voids immediately. Getting Justin Smith adds a seasoned veteran to help out the defensive line. For the offensive line, Justin Smiley's departure adds a bigger role for Joe Staley to step up. Since the Niners did not grab any big offensive linemen in free agency, look for the draft to be a place for them to go. DeShaun Foster will become a great backup for the injury-proned Frank Gore. Allen Rossum will become a very key part in the team's effort to establish great field position in kick returns. The biggest question for the team was at the wide receiever spot, and the Niners took care of that by grabbing division rival foe Bryant Johnson.

Grade: A-

Review of Grade: The team did pretty much everything they needed to do. Being one of the most active teams in the market, the Niners covered a lot of holes on the roster. They have given themselves a great foot up for the upcoming season, not relying heavily on the draft to build themselves back up in the NFC West.

49ers win! - Now what?

OK so the 49ers beat the Skins in a rather meaning less game. Even with the return of Roy’s comments, it seems there was no interest. Was it really necessary for Gore to get to 1,000 yards? I mean if he rolled that ankle again, I am sure we would have all [...]

The 49ers versus the Skins

Yes the season has been disappointing, but at least towards the end the 49ers appear to be going in the right direction. The visitor this Sunday, the Washington Redskins are going the exact opposite way. 6-2 to start the season and now contending to stay above .500 has got to be a huge [...]

49ers beat the Rams - Barely

In a game that the 49ers should have won convincingly, they came out flat. Maybe they thought the Rams were just going to lay down like they have been or maybe they were just not ready. Regardless, they won in the end, it was not pretty but a win is a win. [...]

With Eli Manning playing hurt, the 49ers must pressure him

If you had watched Monday night’s Giants-Browns game, you saw Eli Manning at his worst. Since that great Superbowl run last season, Eli Manning had looked like the next big thing in quarterbacks. But then he ran into the Browns defense and it was just ugly. Manning suffered a bruised chest from the game and [...]

49ers sign FB David Kirtman, Keasey to IR

With FB Zak Keasey’s torn biceps, the 49ers have signed FB David Kirtman. Kirtman had been on the Chargers practice squad and should be familiar with the offensive calls since he was there with Norv Turner. Keasey’s placement on IR also opens up some playing time at fullback for RB Michael Robinson. The other two [...]
