Pittsburgh Steelers Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: James Pete, Steel Tradition

Team Needs: OG, OT, CB, S, WR, ST, DL, ILB

Key additions: LB Keyoran Fox (Kansas City), C Justin Hartwig (Carolina), RB/KR/PR Mewelde Moore (Vikings)

Key Losses: OG Alan Faneca (NY Jets), KR Allen Rossum (San Francisco), TE Jerame Tuman (Arizona)

Key Free Agents Retained: OL Max Starks (transition), DE Travis Kirschke, OG Chris Kemoeatu, LB/DL Andre Frazier, OL Trai Essex, Long Snapper Greg Warren

Free Agency Notes: Pittsburgh's offensive was really in disarray as the season progressed last season. Some attribute it to injury, but Pittsburgh's line hasn't been that good in two years. Pittsburgh lost their best lineman, OG Alan Faneca, who signed a mega-deal with the New York Jets. Faneca is one of the best run blocking guards in the game, but pass-blocking isn't his specialty. Faneca struggled in the Steelers' passing game, because of Ben Roethlisberger's mobility. The team's key moves have been on the line. Sean Mahan, the big OL signing last year, was continually blown off the ball at center, which led to the Steelers to sign center Justin Hartwig from the Carolina Panthers. Hartwig provides a more seasoned center than Mahan, and while he's not a long-term solution, he should be an improvement in the middle. Mahan will add versatility, and will challenge for one of the guard positions, and provide the Steelers with a swing lineman who can back up the guard and center positions. Pittsburgh re-signed OG Chris Kemoeatu, who will be battling Mahan for the departed Faneca's guard position. He's inexperienced, but may be better than people think, especially against the run. Trai Essex was also re-signed, and can play both guard and tackle. He should be in the mix. The watch is now on for Max Starks, who the Steelers have labeled as a transition player. Nobody has offered him a contract, and the Steelers are still working on a deal. If they can't sign him, he'll make the average of the top 10 OL in the league, which would be 6.9 million. Pittsburgh addressed several needs when they signed former Minnesota RB/KR/PR Mewelde Moore. Moore immediately becomes the Steelers third down back, and return man. This will be a major upgrade over old-man Allen Rossum, who was allowed to leave after a disappointing season. Pittsburgh also signed LB Keyoran Fox from the Chiefs to help the Steelers in special teams. He also will move from OLB to ILB to back up a thin position. The Steelers still need to address several areas, including the defensive backfield, the defensive line, wide receiver and special teams. It may be difficult to do with their limited cap space, although the recent release of Cedrick Wilson gives them 2 million more to play with.

Grade: C+ The needs are being addressed, but it's hard to do with restricted cap space.

Review of Grade: In truth, the Steelers have their hands tied with Cap Space, so the moves they have made have fit what they can do. Still, this team really hasn't addressed their issues with any real depth. The offensive line lost Faneca and added Hartwig, while re-signing backups without experience, and keeping the others that weren't all that effective. Nothing against Hartwig, but him at center, with Mahan or Kemoeatu at guard probably isn't the answer. The Steelers line needs an overhaul. The defensive backfield is very thin. Troy Polamalu is as good as it gets, but there are injury issues that keep coming up. Ryan Clark fits well with Polamalu, but after getting injured last year, it's unknown what or if to expect him back and up to snuff. Tyrone Carter is to small and Anthony Smith bites on every play action, provided nothing but burnt toast as fill-ins. The Corners, Ike Taylor and Deshea Townshend are as inconsistent as they come, and have needed replaced for the better part of two-years, but they do just enough to keep their jobs. The defensive line is solid, but Casey Hamption, Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel are all 30 years and over, and after Smith went down, we saw how little depth there is on the dline. The WR position also has two solid starters in Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes, but not a consistent back-up with size and hands. Special Teams still needs addressed. At the end of the day, the Steelers need to add depth in the draft, or it could be a long season.

So much for the Manning nexus for this year

Well, now that Peyton didn't get it done in San Diego, the "Manning cults" are waking up with hangovers trying to figure out what went wrong. The script was all set: Da Boyz would rendezvous in Tampa for a quick bow as the first ever brother co-Super Bowl MVP"s. and ride into a new page of NFL infamy. One small problem, they contracted a case of saddle "Sproules" in San Diego. Some even became so disoriented that they wondered aloud about the MVP voting process and questioned whether Peyton should be the presumptive favorite before the season began.

The Terrible Blog: Chargers, Deebo and Dizzy Ben

This is a good time for a history lesson. First, recent history. The Steelers and Chargers met at Week 11 at Heinz Field with the Steelers winning 11-10. Jeff Reed kicked a FG after a Ben Roethlisberger led 78-yard drive clinched the victory for Pittsburgh. This is also the game where Troy Polamalu's late TD was nullified allowing for the first time in NFL history an 11-10 game to be played. (18-10 should have been the final).

Chargers, Steelers in rematch of bizarre game

The finish to the Chargers-Steelers game was strange enough, with the first 11-10 score in NFL history and Troy Polamalu stripped of a last-play defensive touchdown by an officiating error.

Steelers vs. Chargers, with a special thanks to Phillip Rivers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing off against the San Diego Chargers in a rematch from a November 18 game that saw the Steelers beat the Chargers 11-10.  It was a sloppy game that saw the Steelers dominate the Chargers in all the statistical categories in a game that shouldn't have been as close as it turned out to be.

Pittsburgh's offense rolled up 410 yards against the San Diego defense, while the San Diego offense could only muster up  213 yards against the Steelers.  The Steelers Big 3 carried the day, with Ben Roethlisberger rolling out 308 yards passing, Willie Parker racking up 115 yards rushing, and Hines Ward pulling down 11 catches for 124 yards.

It should have and could have been a blowout.  Unfortunately for the Steelers, they led the Chargers in one other important categories, and that was penalties.  The Steelers rolled out 13 penalties to the tune of 115 yards, and it nearly cost them the game.  Fortunately, Pittsburgh's Jeff Reed kicked a field goal with 15 seconds left in the game to give the Steelers a win that should have been by a much larger margin.

So what does that mean for the game that will take place at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field at 4:45 this coming Sunday afternoon?

The Jeff Reed story: from 'Skippy' to NFL's top Super Ad 'superstar'?

Pittsburgh Steelers' kicker and special teams captain Jeff Reed is one of nine finalists in this season's NFL 'Super Ad: Believe in Now" campaign.

NFL Films filmed 210 players from around the league during training camp prior to this season and were asked to tell the story of their most memorable moment in the NFL.  The NFL then selected six players from each division to post to NFL.com.  The top videos from each division were selected by a fan vote, as well as one wild card, for the finals.

Reed's video focuses on his NFL try-out, or more specifically, how Reed didn't bring any spare clothes in his attempt to make the team.  He assumed that the try-out was just another formality for the Steelers, who hadn't been in contact with him at all until the call to show up and make some kicks midway through the 2002 season.  It's not like any of his other tryouts had panned out.

Steelers enter Titans warzone--Part 1

The Pittsburgh Steelers face off against the Tennessee Titans this weekend in a matchup that should decide who the #1 seed is in the AFC heading into the playoffs.  Both the Steelers and the Titans have already clinched the top two spots in the AFC, and the byes that go along with them.  Truth be told, this could be looked at as the first playoff game between the two teams, and could send an interesting message with the true playoffs looming.

Pittsburgh comes rolling into the game having defeated the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Ravens in consecutive weeks, which put them into position to potentially steal the #1 seed from the Titans.  The Titans are coming off a poor performance against the Houston Texans that saw them lose their second game of the season.  Injuries to their two best defensive linemen, as well as Kerry Collins struggles, have left the Titans with several questions to answer as they head into the playoffs.

Not a good time to face the Steelers.

With many questions to answer, Steel Tradition and MVN's Total Titans exchanged interviews to address the top four questions each had for the other team, as well as predictions for the outcome of the game.

Here's part one of the interview, with me asking the questions with Total Titans' scribe Drexel Perry...after the jump...
