One team's dream of a Big East championship will almost certainly come to an end tonight when No. 20 Pitt plays No. 19 Cincinnati.

Second-ranked Connecticut got its leader back on the court last night and stayed unbeaten with a hard-fought 89-81 victory against La Salle at the Paradise Jam at Charlotte Amalie, U.S.

The final score of the Pitt-Akron game last night would seem to indicate that the Panthers put forth another scintillating early season offensive performance.

Junior Meagan Dooley recorded a career-high 11 blocks, as the University of Pittsburgh women's volleyball team came back in a five-set thriller to upset second-seeded and regular-season co-champion Cincinnati in the first round of the Big East Championship, held at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt won the match with scores of 18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-14 and 15-10 and improved to 17-13 overall.

Sam Young gave Akron problems no matter where he was on the floor, scoring 26 points and taking control during a Pittsburgh surge late in the first half that carried the No. 6 Panthers to an 86-67 victory on Friday night.

On the eve of the start of the Big East Volleyball Championship, Pitt senior Kelly Campbell and junior Meagan Dooley were honored at the Westin Convention Center, Thursday evening, as they earned All-Big East honors at the conference banquet.
