When I think about basketball and the players I have played with and against over the years there are many that jump up to the fore for many reasons. One of those players is the Suns’ first Hall of Fame inductee of which there are sure to be quite a few more. His name is Connie Hawkins, more widely known simply as “Hawk.”

Showing that he truly considers Phil Jackson “a great guy who always took care of me,” Shaquille O’Neal greeted his old coach Thursday with a pregame embrace in the hallway and a few inaudible whispers between the two dressing rooms. When Phoenix coach Terry Porter was asked if he’s gotten the same hug treatment from O’Neal, he smiled and said, “I might be three or four championships away from that yet. But if that’s the standard, I look forward to it.” Jackson said the 2008 version of O’Neal, now 36, has impressed him.

Before the season, Suns coach Terry Porter promised to go to a deeper rotation. So one of the question marks going into the Suns’ first game against the Los Angeles Lakers this season was how their remodeled bench would match up with a bench widely regarded as one of the best in the league.
