Manuel hires Phillies bench coach

Charlie Manuel has finalized his coaching staff for 2009. The Phillies announced yesterday that Pete Mackanin will replace Jimy Williams as the bench coach.

Phillies hire Mackanin as bench coach

Barring any other unforseen departures, the final piece appears to be in place. The Phillies hired former infielder and longtime major league coach Pete Mackanin yesterday, capping off an interesting month in which the club lost its general manager, third-base coach, bench coach and bullpen coach in the wake of its World Series title.

Phillies' offseason blues

That Chase Utley and Pedro Feliz, half of the Phillies' infield, need surgery over this coming week is a reversal of the Phillies' good health during their World Series-winning season.

Surgery could sideline Utley until June

The Phillies' second baseman is slated for arthroscopic procedure on his right hip, and his recovery time could be up to six months.

Golson dealt for potential slugger

Former first-round pick John Mayberry Jr., coming over from the Texas Rangers, could become Pat Burrell's eventual replacement.

Howard finishes 2nd

The Cardinals' Albert Pujols took 18 first-place votes to the Phillies first baseman's 12.

Golson set

The Phillies traded Greg Golson to the Texas Rangers for John Mayberry, a right-handed corner outfielder who turns 25 next month. The Rangers took Mayberry with the 19th pick in the first round of the 2005 draft. Golson was taken by the Phillies in the first round of the 2004 draft, but is [...]

Pat chat

I still think the likely solution in left field for the Phillies is that they’ll bring back Pat Burrell. In case they don’t, the list below includes hitters that 1) are right-handed 2) have spent time in the outfield over the past three seasons and 3) were among the top 40 right-handed hitters who [...]

A Manuel for the ages? (part three)

Six managers left. Here they are, again with their winning percentage with the Phils, their Pythagorean winning percentage with the Phils and whether or not they ever took the Phillies to the post-season: Manager W-L Years [...]

2009 Philadelphia Phillies Projections

Hop over to The Good Phight where MattS dishes out his projections for the current batch of Phillies in 2009. It’s one of the more thorough projection explanations out there. Here’s a snippet of his explanation: Rollins power went down this year, but he appeared to master the strike zone like never before, raising his BB% from [...]

Bad News for Chase Utley, Phillies

We have some bad news per Todd Zolecki: Chase Utley will have right hip surgery, and will miss the next four to six months. That means Utley will be back near the end of March at the earliest, missing almost all of spring training. And it could mean that Utley misses the first one-third of the season. There [...]

Somewhat of an Update

I apologize for the lack of meaningful content lately here at Crashburn Alley. I’ve been a bit busy with real life and it will probably stay that way until about mid-December. As usual, I’ll try and be faithful with Phillies and general baseball news. Just an FYI for anyone who may be constantly clicking the [...]

Friday: Phils ink Mackanin for bench coach vacancy

Former Major League manager Pete Mackanin has been hired to fill the void left by Jimy Williams. General manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. and manager Charlie Manuel made a joint announcement today. From a Phillies news release: Mackanin, 57, spent this past year as a pro scout for the New York Yankees after managing the Cincinnati Reds for the final three months of the 2007 season. Under his supervision, the Reds went 41-39 (.513) and had the second-best record in the...

Phillies, Rangers exchange former first-rounders

The Phillies sent 2004 first-round pick Greg Golson to Texas in exchange for 2005 first-rounder John Mayberry Jr. in a swap of toolsy prospects. Mayberry, 24, split the 2008 season between double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma and hit a combined .264 with 38 doubles, 20 home runs, 71 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 135 games. A right-handed batter, he is the son of former Major Leaguer John Mayberry, who had a 15-year career (1968-82) with the Houston Astros, Kansas...

Chase Utley to miss up to 6 months with hip surgery

As many anticipated, Chase Utley will require surgery to repair his right hip and will miss four to six months, a recovery that could put him out of action until June, according to a Phillies news release. Utley, 29, has undergone several offseason diagnostic tests on his hip and team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti reached the conclusion that surgery was necessary. According to the report, Utley could be cleared to resume baseball activities in three or four months, but full...
