Notre Dame Fighting Irish

SOUTH BEND -- Notre Dame women's basketball coach Muffet McGraw was apprehensive Wednesday night when she noticed Skylar Diggins wasn't in her regular seat before start of the Irish game against Evansville at the Joyce Center.

Notre Dame will host its first "carbon-neutral" football game Saturday, which means the recycling will involve more than the rise-and-fall storyline of yet another Irish coach.

The Notre Dame hockey team on Thursday announced its five-man recruiting class for the 2009-10 season.

Junior John Lytle won three individual events but the Notre Dame men's swimming team dropped Friday's dual meet to No. 11 Ohio State, 172.5-86.5, at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Greg Davis returns as one of the top throwers for the Irish this season. His fifth-place finish in the hammer throw helped the Irish men win the 2008 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in May. He also finished fourth in the weight throw during the indoor season. He recorded top-15 finishes in every meet he competed in as a freshman a year ago.

On its quest for a 10th BIG EAST Conference tournament title, the Notre Dame volleyball team downed Connecticut, 3-0, Friday at Fitzgerald Field House in the opening round of the 2008 BIG EAST Championship.

The Irish play host to the Orangemen of Syracuse at Notre Dame Stadium this Saturday. Notre Dame and Syracuse first played in 1914. They didn’t play again until 1961 when the unranked Irish tripped up number ten ranked Syracuse 17-15 in South Bend. The Orangemen and Irish have clashed five times with the Irish holding a 3-2 record, 2-0 at home, 1-1 at Syracuse, and 1-0 at Yankee Stadium.

How much better can the No. 1 offensive tackle in America get? Well, according to Xavier Nixon's Head Coach Richard Bailey he has improved in a number of areas since his ranking came out a while ago. Bailey also says that Nixon may be out of time for official visits other than the one he already took to Florida and four teams stand out for the big time offensive lineman.
