North Carolina Tar Heels

N.C. State entered the season with a five-player logjam at quarterback. North Carolina returned a passer coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history. Yet it's UNC that has yet to name a starter for today's game.

The UNC women's soccer team didn't make it past the third round last year, and that's the hurdle that the University of Illinois represents in today's match at 5:30 pm at Fetzer Field.

Tyler Hansbrough, the reigning national college basketball player of the year, made his 2008-09 debut Friday night as top-ranked North Carolina defeated UC Santa Barbara 84-67.

For the second successive day, sophomore Tyler Harris of the University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team eradicated a school record in an individual medley event as the Carolina men's and women's teams extended their leads at the Gamecock Invitational at Carolina Natatorium. After setting a school record in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday night, Harris came back on Friday night and blew his own record in the 400-yard individual medley out of the water. Harris won the event in a time of 3 minutes, 44 seconds flat, besting his school record and career best of 3:47.04 set at last year's NCAA Championships. Harris finished 15.04 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the event. Harris easily eclipsed the automatic NCAA qualifying time of 3:44.88 in the event.

A night after winning their ninth consecutive match the North Carolina volleyball team took a step back Friday night in the Dean E. Smith Center with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) loss to Florida State. With the loss Carolina falls to 20-10 on the year and 14-5 in the ACC and faces a must win situation Nov. 28 when the Tar Heels host NC State at 1 p.m. with the ACC title on the line. A win by the Tar Heels would clinch their first title since the 2005 squad took the championship.
