Melissa Boal and Alyssa Baldin each scored twice as Wayne State won its College Hockey America Conference opener, defeating visiting Syracuse, 5-3. Sam Poyton's team-leading 12th goal was the game-winner for the Warriors (8-2, 1-0), who won their fifth straight. The Warriors closed out the scoring against Syracuse (3-9, 0-5) on Baldin's 11th of the season, a short-handed goal at 17:51 of the second period. The teams play again at 2 p.m. today at the City Sports Center in Detroit.

Spartans Stunned at UNO, 7-1

Michigan State dropped its fifth consecutive game, a 7-1 loss at Nebraska-Omaha, on Friday evening. Dan Swenson had a hat trick for the homestanding Mavericks, who improve to 8-2-1, 4-2-1-1 in CCHA play. Senior Kurt Kivisto had the Spartan goal, as MSU falls to 4-7-2 overall and 2-5-2-2 in conference action.

Volleyball Swept at No. 18 Purdue

The 2008 Michigan State volleyball team (14-14, 6-11 Big Ten) fell at No. 18 Purdue, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-17), Friday night at Belin Court. Freshman outside hitter Becca Zlabis (Wheaton, Ill.) paced MSU with 15 kills, giving her 34 total kills against the Boilermakers this season. Junior Mischelle Nelson (Naperville, Ill.) finished the match with nine kills on 15 attacks while hitting a team-high .500. The nine kills from Nelson was one off of her career-high, set back in 2006 against Ball State.

Spartan Swimmers Break School Records

The Michigan State swimming and diving teams each turned in strong performances on day one of the TYR Sport Conference Cup in Evanston, Ill. on Friday (Nov. 21) night. After day one of the three team invitational, the MSU men's team is just four points out of first place with a total of 405 points. The women's team is also in second place with 414.5 points. Northwestern leads both the men's and women's competitions with 409 and 501.5, respectively.
