Chicago Bears Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Mike Montgomery, mvn.com/nfl-bears

Team Needs: OL, QB, RB, S

Key additions: WR Marty Booker (Miami), WR Brandon Lloyd (Washington)

Key Losses: Bernard Berrian (Minnesota), Mushin Muhammad (Carolina), LB Brendon Ayanbadejo (Baltimore), QB Brian Griese (Tampa Bay)

Key Free Agents Retained: LB Lance Briggs (Resigned), QB Kyle Orton (Resigned), S Brandon McGowan (Resigned)

Free Agency Notes: The Bears seem to be removing what talent they have to streak down the sidelines with equally as old Veterans (Muhammad for Booker) and less promising talent (Berrian for Lloyd). Also, while we have nothing to be proud of at the quarterback position, the retention of Orton gives us time to ease in a new quarterback. Also, the resigning of Lance Briggs brings more stability to the a defense that has the potential to flick the switch and become dominant once again. The Bears biggest problem aside from the quarterback problem is that they need to address the problems with their aging offensive line, as well as the runningback spot. Cedric Benson simply can't last the whole season and Adrian Peterson simply just isn't an every down back.

Grade: C

Review of Grade: With no offensive line moves made the far, the only real highlight is the retention of Briggs. No new big playmakers have been added to the squad, and it looks like the Bears will rely heavily on their 11 draft picks in '08.

If Williams is in, then who's out?

Brad Biggs: The trick with getting first-round draft pick Chris Williams on the field, besides finding the right opportunity, is picking someone to send to the bench. When Williams got his first action of the year on offense last Sunday at Green Bay -- five plays on the final drive -- the odd man out was left guard Josh Beekman. Williams entered, and left tackle John St. Clair was kicked inside to Beekman's spot to make room.

Rams guard happy to welcome Bears fans to St. Louis

photo
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Bears fans are expected to flock to the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis to see their team play Sunday, and Rams guard Richie Incognito is just fine with that.

Joniak's keys to the game

With over 20 years covering sports in Chicago, veteran play-by-play announcer Jeff Joniak is in his seventh season as the voice of the Bears. A recipient of a 2005 Silver Dome Award for his play-by-play call, Joniak is familiar to Bears fans for his five years as the team's pre- and post-game host and as drive-time sports anchor on WBBM.

Briggs: Beleaguered Bears defense ready to make a stand

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – As far as linebacker Lance Briggs is concerned, the embattled Bears defense is fed up with the way it has played this season and isn't going to take it anymore.

Bears Survive Shoot Out

The Chicago Bears are known for many things, great defense, gritty running, and flashy special teams.  For today, the Bears took on an unusual role as participant in a shoot out, running up the score to 48-41 against the Minnesota Vikings.  At one point the Bears were up by 17 points in the 4th quarter [...]

Bears Injuries Accumulating

The Chicago Bears have dealt with injuries on the defensive side of the ball for the past few years, especially in the secondary.  This year has proved to be no exception. Starting cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Nathan Vasher are both becoming question marks week-by-week for their availability on Sundays.  Vasher has a wrist injury and Tillman [...]

Bears Chances Look Murky

In a few hours the Chicago Bears will take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field.  A few weeks ago I was one of the few people that thought the Bears could beat the Indianapolis Colts in an upset.  I thought they could beat the Panthers and the Bucs but some terrible fourth quarter defense [...]
