NFL Picks for Week 13 –
Atlanta at St. Louis (-3) – The Rams had no business losing last week at home to Seattle. Gus Frerotte completely choked the game away, unable to throw a five-yard pass and fumbling the ball on the last play. Luckily, this week St. Louis won’t be in a situation for Frerotte to bumble the game away. The Rams should win easily against the lowly Falcons. Pick: St. Louis -3
Buffalo at Washington (-5.5) – The Redskins have lost four of their last five games, and their only win is in overtime against the Jets (an underdog to the Dolphins this week). We have no idea how the team will react after the devastating event with Sean Taylor. It needs this victory to stay in the playoff hunt. The Redskins may win, but the Bills will keep it close. Pick: Buffalo + 5.5
Detroit at Minnesota (-4) – Weren’t the Lions 6-2? This week we find out if the Lions have shut down for the season or still have some fight in them. The oddsmakers obviously believe they’re done for the year. We think they still have a bit left to give and will keep the Vikings down this week. Pick: Detroit +4
Houston at Tennessee (-3.5) – Vince Young is gaining a load of yards passing the last three weeks, but it was in games Tennessee lost by at least 14 points. Titans fans should be more concerned about Albert Haynesworth. He makes that defense tick, and it shows in his absence. The Texans barely lost to the Titans at home with Sage Rosenfels at QB and no Andre Johnson. Texans get it done this time. Pick: Houston +3.5
Jacksonville at Indianapolis (-6.5) – The last time these two teams played the Jags were on a roll and wanted to prove they were in the AFC elite. The Colts beat them 29-7 at Jacksonville. Again, the Jags are on a roll and play the Colts. This time the Colts are playing at home, and if they beat the Jags by 22 at Jacksonville, why wouldn’t we pick the Colts to beat them by at least 6 points at home. Pick: Indianapolis -6.5
New York Jets at Miami (-1) – Since the Cowboys and Packers played on Thursday, this is the game of the weekend. The Dolphins know this is their best shot at victory this season. The last thing the Jets want is to be the team that lost to Miami in 2007. If Cameron puts some confidence in John Beck and allows him to throw the ball farther than five yards, the Dolphins might see their first victory. Pick: Miami -1
San Diego (-5.5) at Kansas City – The Chiefs appear to be done for the season. They’ve lost 4 games in a row, including to the Raiders at home by three points last week. Why would we think the Chargers can’t win by six points this week? Pick: San Diego -5.5
Seattle at Philadelphia (-3) – The Eagles looked great on Sunday night against the Pats. We are still not sure who will be playing QB for the Eagles this week, but we know that Westbrook will be carrying the ball. Westbrook has been the best back in the league this year and will need to carry the load against the Seahawks. Seattle had a terrible time blocking the blitzes last week against the Rams. Look for Jim Johnson to bring pressure from all over the field to get to Hasselbeck. Seattle will need Morris and Alexander to take some pressure off the passing game if the Hawks are to win. Pick: Philadelphia –3
San Francisco at Carolina (-3) – “Old Man” Testaverde will again get the start for the Panthers. He needs to get the ball to Steve Smith down the field. Stretching the field should open up running lanes for Foster and Williams. The 49ers are going to ride the Frank Gore momentum to another victory. The defense is solid and should be able to keep the Panthers in check. This should be a low-scoring game; we expect a field goal to be the difference. Pick: San Francisco +3
Cleveland at Arizona (-1) – This game is going to be a shoot out. We will be surprised if there aren’t 80 total points scored. The team that has the ball last will win this game. We like the Cleveland Browns because of the offensive line. Pick: Cleveland +1
Denver (-3.5) at Oakland – Will this be the week we see JaMarcus Russell? Culpepper and McCown are both nursing injuries, so Russell should see some time. The Broncos may have Travis Henry back at RB. Jay Cutler has been playing much better the last few weeks and that should continue against the Raiders this week. Pick: Denver –3.5
Tampa Bay at New Orleans (-3) – This game is impossible to pick at this point. No one knows for sure who the Tampa QB will be. If Garcia plays, the Bucs win this game easily. If not, it is a lot closer. We lean to the Bucs because of their “D.” Pick: Tampa Bay +3
NY Giants (-1.5) at Chicago – Have the Giants started their annual second-half meltdown? They need to get ahead early and take some pressure off Manning if they want to win at Chicago. The Bears are looking for new starting RB Adrian Peterson to take pressure off of Rex Grossman. Whichever QB makes the fewest mistakes will win this game. Pick: NY Giants –1.5
Cincinnati at Pittsburgh (-7) – Two weeks ago this would have been an easy pick. The Steelers were rolling and looked like one of the better teams in the AFC. After losing to the Jets and barely escaping Miami with a win, this pick is a little tougher. If the teams can move on that Heinz Field turf, we should have a huge offensive game on both sides. We’ll take the better defensive team at home. Pick: Pittsburgh –7
New England (-20) at Baltimore – We don’t think the Ravens can move the ball on the Patriots. Bill Belichick will bring eight men into the box and force Baltimore to beat him with the pass, which it can’t do. On the other hand, Jim Johnson showed teams how to slow down Brady and company last week. Twenty points is a big spread, but we think New England is that good. Pick: New England -20
