NCAA Football Week 4 Recap
This Week in NCAA Football –
Every Monday, we share with you our thoughts on this weekend’s games. This week is no different. We are not sure we learned as much as we have in previous weeks, but some interesting things did come out this weekend. Here is what we noticed:
* West Virginia is dangerous. We know everyone is thinking the Mountaineers only played East Carolina, but does anyone remember what East Carolina did against Virginia Tech? West Virginia has several dangerous weapons. The team comes from all angles and scores almost at will. Pat White and Steve Slaton are the big names, but Darius Reynaud and Noel Devine are very dangerous as well. We can’t wait to see West Virginia play South Florida on Friday.
* Is Colt Brennan a system QB? Hawaii is known for QBs with big passing numbers. Colt is no different. Brennan has been torching defenses, averaging about 400 yards per game. This week he sat out with an injury so the QB production went down, right? Not at all. Tyler Graunke stepped in and, after brushing off the rust, threw for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns before giving way to 3rd stringer Inoke Funaki who handled mop up time. We know Hawaii played Charleston Southern, but it still makes you think Brennan just may be the next Timmy Chang.
* Trick plays are still a key part of college football. We don’t remember another weekend with more half-back passes, wide-receiver passes, flee flickers, and every other trick play. Our personal favorite was LSU’s fake field goal. Holder Matt Flynn took the snap, touched it to the ground like he was going to place it, and then flipped a no-look pass over his head to the kicker that was running around the end. He ran untouched into the end zone for a touchdown. It was the best-executed trick play of the weekend.
* The key to beating Michigan is to spread the team out. This is not exactly news, so why didn’t Penn State use the info to its advantage? The game Saturday was a slugfest, a grind- it-out game that was boring to watch for the fans. Paterno showed his age and perhaps lack of imagination when he just played Michigan’s game. Michigan is back in the hunt for the Big Ten Championship, but it better hope teams don’t read this article and pick it apart with the 4 and 5 wideout sets.
These are our thoughts about the weekend. What did you see? Was there something we should have brought up? Let us know. We look forward to your comments.
