Who is the Best Young QB in the NFL?
Over the past few drafts, we have had several good quarterbacks taken, and a few of those QBs have actually taken over starting jobs. Some of the guys are high-profile players while others are a little more under the radar. Let’s take a look at which of these QBs are poised to take over as the best QB when Manning and Brady leave the game. Here is what I think:
* Philip Rivers - Of the guys I will discuss,Rivers is the least talented; however, is there a better situation than his in San Diego? He has the best running back in the game lined up behind him and the best tight end to ever play the game running down the middle of the field catching touchdowns. To top it all off, Norv Turner was hired to be the head football coach for the Chargers. Norv should mentor Rivers and get the most out of him. Rivers will be a Super Bowl champion before his career is over.
* Jay Cutler - Cutler is a strong-armed QB with a lot of talent. Add to the talent one of the best offensive minds in the game as head coach, and it makes for a great situation. The fact that he has proven WRs in Rod Smith and Javon Walker helps, as does the addition of Daniel Graham at TE and Travis Henry at RB. This team is poised for a big year and Cutler will take them there.
* Vince Young - A lot of people would have Vince Young at the top of this list because he is a proven winner. I agree he is a winner, but I still have concerns about his delivery. I was one of the few people that never bought into Vick as a QB, and I was right. I am not saying Young will be another Michael Vick, but I am not 100% sold yet. A winning season would do a lot to persuade me.
* Matt Leinart - Leinart is clearly surrounded by the best talent. Edge, Boldin, and Fitzgerald make Leinart that much better; however, his line needs help. The offensive line has been a problem for a long time in Arizona. New coach Ken Whisenhunt has vowed to cure this problem, but I say prove it! Not to mention Leinart is a little too “Hollywood,” which could take away from his preparation. He will be good, but we will have to wait and see if he is great.
* Alex Smith - He made huge strides last year and would have been higher on this list except for one thing: he lost Norv Turner. The big question is whether he can continue to grow and improve without his mentor. He has a good cast around him, and he has all the tools. Let’s just see how he does in a new system with a new coordinator.
* Tony Romo - I am not sold on Romo at all. He came out like gangbusters last year and then petered off as the year went on. Jason Garrett, the offensive coordinator, has his work cut out for him. He has to help Romo forget the dropped snap in the playoffs last year and get him back to where he was in his first five starts. If he can do that, the Cowboys may have their next Troy Aikman. But don’t hold your breath.
These young QBs all have the chance to be great, but which one will live up to the expectations? It will be very intriguing to watch these players evolve and grow as they get more experience. My best guess is that two of these guys will win championships before their careers are through. Which two is anyone’s guess.
