Well, folks, it’s time to talk football. Training camps start later this month, so let’s look at some quarterbacks that will be feeling pressure as the preseason begins:

* Rex Grossman - It seems weird that a starting QB from the Super Bowl is feeling pressure to succeed, but that is exactly the situation Rex is in. He will be a free agent after this year and hasn’t proven himself to be the main man. He needs to get consistent or Brian Griese will take his spot. The question is whether the QB of the future is Grossman or Orton.

* Byron Leftwich - Byron does not seem to get along with his coach, Jack Del Rio, but he is the most talented QB on this roster. He needs to become the QB they envisioned when they drafted him. He has the offensive weapons—he just needs to use them. If he struggles in camp, look for Garrard to take over as the signal caller.

* Eli Manning - It is put up or shut up for Eli. Tom Coughlin is on the hot seat and needs Eli to help him get off. Kevin Gilbride is the new Offensive Coordinator and should help mentor Manning. Eli now has the experience and needs to take control of this team.

* Matt Schaub - Yes, Schaub is under pressure. The Texans forked out a lot of money to bring Schaub in. He only has two career starts but has all ready been given the reigns of this team and the task of pulling them out of the AFC South basement. He really needs to be what the Texans believe he is. He should be good if the offensive line can keep him upright.

These are the four QBs that need to step up or start looking over their shoulders. There are a few others that need to improve big time for their teams to take the next step: Matt Hasselbeck needs to bounce back from last year’s injury-plagued season—if he does, we may see the Seahawks in the Super Bowl again; Jay Cutler is another young QB that has the success of his team riding on his shoulders, but Travis Henry should help take some pressure off of Cutler; and, finally, Alex Smith needs to show he can win without Norv Turner.

The position of quarterback is the toughest on the field. He is often the difference between winning and losing. The QBs listed above have the potential to help their respective teams make huge strides this year or could be the cause of their teams’ demise. Watch the progression of these guys in camp, and you will have a good idea where their teams will finish the season.

Nice overview…I would include Alex Smith as a potential stressful QB in ‘07.
