Was the NBA draft more entertaining than the Finals?

As a sportswriter living in the Seattle area, I’d been anticipating the NBA draft for the last month—the idea of Kevin Durant being here locally created an incredible buzz—and the draft did not disappoint. Even after the two most sought-after college players in years were drafted 1st and 2nd, the draft remained entertaining. Well, most of the time. Here are the highlights and lowlights of the NBA draft coverage:

The Highlights

* I really enjoyed seeing Al Horford picked 3rd. You could see the excitement not only from Horford and his family but also from his teammates, Brewer and Noah. It is nice to see such great camaraderie between college teammates. The gator chop on stage was classic.

* I usually hate seeing Stephen A. Smith rant about things, but his exchanges with Dick Vitale about whether the 2003 draft was deeper than the 2007 were hilarious. I always like seeing two blowhards go at each other. I think that Vitale won in that exchange

* The second best Stephen A. Smith rant was when that pip squeak—who never played ball—called out Michael Jordan on the JRich trade. He was right, though: Jordan should not make personnel decisions.

* I thought the panel was decent. The four guys—Bilas, Steven A., Jackson and Tirico—were really good. They brought a nice contrast of styles and provided good solid information as well.

* Finally, I know that most people think they are cheesy, but I like to watch those goofy photo shoots they do with the athletes. They show you how down-to-earth these kids really are.

The Lowlights

* Does Andy Katz really have to reveal picks before the commissioner? When he announced the Seattle/Boston trade, he ended by saying that the 5th pick was going to be Jeff Green going to Seattle. Thanks for ruining the anticipation, Andy.

* Jim Gray! Isn’t he always a lowlight? His interview with Mitch Kupchak was one of the worst ever. After Mitch made clear in the first question he wasn’t discussing Kobe, why did Gray continue that line of questioning? Why not ask why the Lakers would take a PG for the second year in a row? How does Jim Gray have a job?

* Is Stuart Scott for real? Let the kids who just got drafted say something. This is about them, not you, Stuart.

After watching the NFL draft and the NBA draft wire-to-wire, the NBA draft is clearly more entertaining. The NFL needs to take a look at the five-minute per pick format and really consider it. I loved that we got through the entire NBA draft in less time than it took to have Brady Quinn picked in the NFL draft. I bet the draft last night received higher ratings than the NBA Finals.
