Are Fantasy Sports Ruining Our Past Times?
Can you imagine 10 years ago a Dallas Cowboys fan cheering for a Philadelphia Eagles QB? Or a Boston Red Sox fan pulling for a New York Yankees pitcher? No way! But that’s exactly what’s happening today. Sports fans are becoming more about the players than the teams. Last football season a co-worker who is a diehard Seahawks fan told me, “I hope the Seahawks win the game, but I really need Tory Holt to go off!” What? Really? You don’t want a 31-7 blowout? Can we, as sports fans, have it both ways?
Back in the day, it was the team that mattered. Now days, it is all about the players. There are two main factors contributing to this shift in allegiances. First is free agency–players move to where the money is. Second, and more to blame, is the increase in popularity of fantasy sports. I will admit that I am an avid fantasy player, especially football. However, I will never root against my team no matter if it costs me a fantasy loss or not. I have been known to bench star players if they are playing against my team so there is no temptation to lose my head and root for the player. My professional teams always come first.
We at sportprojections.com are fanatical about our teams. We hope that we can be subjective and fair in our predictions, but we do love our teams. That being said, we would never let anything get in the way of our rooting interests. We will never let fantasy sports ruin the loyalties that we have for our beloved teams. Can you say the same?

Nice column. I think there are many people who agree with you, but I still believe team loyalty thrives. Fantasy sports have changed our culture, for sure, as we now know more about individuals than ever before. Maybe we are a dying breed, but I feel more loss and heartache when the Saints lose than when my fantasy team loses, though I just love it when both teams win!
