Question: Why do we love the off-season?

Answer: Because we can daydream about what our favorite team can become.

We love to speculate:

  • Who can they acquire in a trade?
  • Who will they sign during free agency?
  • Who can they recruit to fill this need?
  • What load of garbage player can we dump on another team?
  • If we get such-and-such player, how good can our team be?

The average fan loves this stuff because we convince ourselves we’re as smart as our local general manager or recruiter. Many times, it seems we are even smarter—at least based on their off-season moves. We see the gaps the team needs to fill and our minds flutter as we figure out the correct solution.

As a warning, some of these sports nuts do get far too crazy in the head. They spend all night figuring out the deal of deals and just can’t wait to spread the word to the world. They get to work and start proposing their trade. They tell their co-worker the trade offer and their co-worker gives them the “That’s not a bad idea”. When you hear “that’s not a bad idea,” stop now! I mean, seriously, stop now. Your co-worker is basically thinking “How in the world does this guy have a job here?” “There is no way this trade will go down.” “I’ll just humor him and then walk away.”

Spurred on by his co-worker’s ”that’s not a bad idea,” this sports nut calls his local sports radio show. He gets on the phone and waits 35 minutes to give his genius idea. Honestly, he thinks the local team might call him and ask for more suggestions in the future. He can see himself becoming pseudo-general manager for the team. Finally, he gets on the air and realizes what an idiot he is. The radio host tells him it is a ludicrous idea and hangs up on him after 15 seconds on the air. (A note to radio hosts: If you do not do this, you should be fired immediately. Don’t waste the time and interest of your sane sports fans with garbage calls like this. I understand you want to be nice to your audience, but your larger audience will have more respect for you when you hang up on “insane sports nut” immediately. I’m not joking about this.)

We enjoy working at www.SportProjections.com. We love to figure out what step is next for all our favorite teams. But if we become too much of the “insane sports nut,” please call us out on it.

Five Things I’m currently pondering:

  • Are the Patriots going to deal with the Asante Samuel issue better than they did with Deion Branch?
  • Will “brilliant” Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss make a deal to make the Lakers contenders in the west?
  • Will Urban Meyer be able to keep the Gators atop of the SEC after only returning 8 starters from the championship team?
  • Will the Trail Blazers get another high draft selection and deal Zach Randolph?
  • What teams in MLB will make a blockbuster move at the trading deadline to make a run at the championship?
